Electronic ballot box
What is the electronic ballot box?
First of all, it's important to understand what the electronic ballot box is and what its function is. The electronic ballot box is a closed electronic device that has its own CPU, power supply and software to ensure that it works. This device is used to record the votes of Brazilian voters during elections.
The electronic ballot box used in Brazilian elections has a keypad similar to the numeric keypad on a conventional telephone. It is used by voters to enter the number of the candidate they intend to vote for. Once the number has been entered, the name of the candidate, their party and a photo appear on the display. The voter can then confirm their vote or correct it if a typing error has been made.
The device has an internal memory card that stores the votes in encrypted form. The aim is to guarantee the security of the information contained therein and prevent fraud. The counting of the votes recorded by the ballot boxes is entirely digital and carried out by computers belonging to the Superior Electoral Court.
Connected to the machine is the poll worker's terminal, a small computer that releases the ballot box so that voters can cast their votes. This terminal is currently linked to a biometric reader, which is used to confirm the voter's identity. Finally, the electronic ballot box has a small printer that issues a bulletin as soon as the voting period is over.
